Position Description

 

This position is responsible for managing all aspects of Representative Meek’s office, providing support for the office’s legislative goals, and assisting the constituents of House District 40. This position may require working irregular hours, including some evenings and weekends, at the State Capitol in Salem as well as in the Portland metro area.

 

A successful candidate for this position is self-motivated and able to work independently on multiple projects while exercising strong professional judgement; an excellent communicator; has strong research and policy analysis skills; is highly-organized; able to maintain confidentiality; and knowledgeable in the development of policy and the Oregon legislative process.

 

Duties include:

 

  • Policy Work: Developing and executing a plan for successfully passing the Representative’s legislative agenda while tracking bills and legislative concepts.

 

o Working with Legislative Counsel and stakeholders to draft and amend legislation.

o Tracking bills and legislative concepts, as well as monitoring committee hearings and floor debates.

o Performing policy analysis and research on bills, current statutes and legislative concepts.

o Advising the Representative on legislative and policy matters.

o Attending meetings in the Capitol or in-district on behalf of the Representative.

o Organizing and staffing work groups, task forces, tours, and other events.

o Writing committee testimony and floor speeches.

 

  • District Outreach: Coordinating the Representative’s outreach to those who live and work in House District 40.

 

o Organizing, scheduling and staffing town halls, constituent coffees and other events.

o Ensuring attendance and presence at important community events in House District 40.

 

  • Constituent Services: Providing responsive constituent services on behalf of the people of House District 40.

 

o Tracking and assisting with responses to all constituents (via phone, email, or letter).

o Acting as a liaison between the Representative and constituents.

o Helping to provide resources and solutions to constituents who are seeking the office’s assistance with various problems.

 

  • Scheduling: Managing the Representative’s calendar and meeting requests.

 

o Receive and schedule meeting requests for appointments from constituents, other legislators, members of the public, lobbyists, and advocates, as well as invitations to events.

o Attend most meetings that the Representative holds, take detailed notes, and ensure meetings are concluded in a timely manner.

o Proactively reach out to schedule meetings or phone calls – both for yourself and for the Representative – needed to help pass the Representative’s legislative agenda or assist constituents.

 

  • Communications: Manage external communications to ensure that constituents are informed of the Legislature’s work, including:

 

o Emails

o Online newsletters and social media

o Press releases

o Op-Ed columns

o In-district events

 

  • Office Management: Manage the day-to-day activities of the office.

 

o Maintain accurate and up-to-date files and a system of tracking all pertinent information for the office (e.g. legislation, constituent communications, etc.)

o Manage and supervise staff (during session) and interns.

o Ensure the office is always fully functional and operational.

 

  • Other duties as assigned
